These fabric Christmas Hearts are a great way to use up fabric scraps or repurpose home textiles. You can salvage the ‘good bits’ from old shirts, table clothes or kids clothes. Have fun choosing colours and buttons to complement your tree, or perhaps sew a few to give. They make a lovely hand made present for neighbours, teachers, friends or even your Valentine - small, but heartfelt.

You can also choose to fill them with a couple of cloves to add a delicious Christmas scent. Or perhaps lavender and use as a drawer sachet?

Each heart measures 10cm x 10cm

You will need:
Scraps of fabric - approx 24cm x 12cm for each heart
Fusible wadding
Buttons, 18mm - 25mm diametre
Ribbon or cotton tape
Matching thread
Heart Pattern - create your own 12cm x 12cm heart or download our template.

Instructions:

Press fusible wadding to the wrong side of each piece of fabric.

Cut pairs of hearts from fused fabric - one pair for each ornament.

Cut a length of ribbon, approx 30cm this will be
used to hang your ornament. Fold the ribbon in half and pin this to the right side of one heart. Line up the cut ends of the ribbon with the centre top of your heart, ribbon loop facing towards centre of heart.

Take a second heart and place on top of the first heart - with right sides facing and lining up edges. Ensure the ribbon is tucked in between the two heart pieces so that it is secured at the centre top, but not elsewhere when you
stitch the hearts together.

Sew a 6mm seam around the edge of the heart, leaving a 4cm opening on one side. Trim the bottom point, clip curves.

Turn the heart through to the right side. Push out the point with a bamboo point turner or similar. Be careful not to push a hole through the seam!

Turn in the seam allowance on the opening and press. Optional: Fill your heart with cloves or lavender.

Using an invisible ladder stitch, sew up the opening.

Sew a pretty button on the front and you are done!
