DIY : Scrap Fabric Christmas Baubles

Christmas baubles and surely the heavy lifters of the season.  Each year boxes are pulled down from attics, out from under the stairs or the back of the garage and the humble bauble emerges to add festive cheer with colour, sparkle and shine.  But more than that, they carry treasured memories of years gone by and places visited, time stamps of growing families, and reminders of loved ones passed. Giving us a little moment to pause in the nostalgia of life.

This easy advent project turns that sentiment into something you can craft, using up fabric scraps along the way. It is simple enough to share with young makers and those who don't yet think of themselves as the creative type.

Keep it simple with one colour, or make a splash with many!

So grab some scraps, crank up the carols and start creating next year's treasured memories.

You'll need:
✂️ Clear refillable bauble
✂️ Fabric scraps.  Light weight woven fabric that will easily wrap around the bauble.  Avoid anything too stiff.
✂️ A pair of fabric scissors.  Pinking shears give a decorative edge.
✂️ Fabric glue and brush
✂️ Coloured ribbon. Approx 70cm

Method:

  • Iron fabric flat.
  • Cut fabric into eight 2.5cm x 32cm strips (this is for a 10cm bauble)
  • Remove cap and ring from top of bauble
  • Apply glue around the centre of the bauble
  • Wrap first four strips of fabric evenly around bauble.
  • Apply glue prior to adding each strip.
  • Smooth fabric as much as possible - brushing on more glue if needed.
  • Trim these strips so that they finish at the base of the neck of the bauble.
  • Wrap remaining four strips, trimming some of these so that the neck of the bauble ends up being covered in one layer of fabric.
  • Continue to add glue with each strip to ensure all strips lay smooth.
  • Apply a final layer of glue to ensure all fabric is evenly covered.

  • Trim fabric at top of bauble, let dry.
  • Pop silver cap back into top of bauble, attach ribbon and voila!

Make it your own:
✂️ Swap out the strips of fabric for random scrappy shapes
✂️ Play with fabrics or varying textures.
✂️ Add ribbon or lace
✂️ Top the bauble with an oversized ribbon
